What matters to us

Greetings to all fellow conservative family men!

Welcome to the inaugural post in my first ever blog!  I started this blog in order to share with other like minded folks, my ideas of how to follow the conservative ideals that I learned from my father and grandfather into my daily life.

First,  I need to share sad news.  My Grandfather passed away at 101 (less than a month from 102) years of age this past weekend.  God bless his incredible soul!

I'd like to share some of his wisdom with all of you who read this.

When asked how he attained this awesome longevity and simple happiness in life, he responded with 4 gems.

1.  LIve clean.  Simple right?  He never once, to my knowledge, drank, smoked, nor cursed.   (Unfortunately, that already cuts my life expectancy in half!!)   Gramps insisted that the quality of life that you live is rooted in the quality of effort that you put into it.

2.  Be beholden to no man.   My Grandfather passed never having any significant debt nor any financial obligations that would burden his family.  This is nearly impossible to attain in this day and age of borrow to win.   He was a firm believer in the live on your own bootstraps or go without.   His views on the Federal Reserve and the devaluing of the dollar were firm in opposition.  He could be quoted saying:  "Anything borrowed will someday be paid back with interest.  Are you prepared to pay that with interest today?  If not, then you are in extreme danger."   One of his greatest fears was to live long enough to see the United States lose it's sovereignty because we couldn't pay back our debt to other nations.

3.  Vote.   Gramps never missed a single vote in his entire lifetime.  Think about that for a minute.  He didn't miss a single vote from the lowest local election all the way up to every Presidential election since 1923.  We researched this fact and it was corroborated with our local government officials as fact.
Amazing!   Gramps felt that voting was our responsibility and not just a privilege.  He was disgusted with the current "vote for the lesser of 2 evils" mentality of today.  He insisted that your vote must be made based on your core values, even if you felt that the person you voted for didn't have a chance to win.  Ironically, He and I would most likely have voted for the same man in the 2008 election if he had lived long enough to do so.  I'll cover who that is in another posting.

4.  Love.  Gramps was surrounded by his family the moment of his death.  He was always well loved.  He had a family that was huge!  5 Children (outlived 2 sons), 2 wives (one of 38 years and another of 26 years, both passed on as well), 18 Grandchildren, 8 Great grand Children, and 2 Great, Great, Grandchildren.  Not to mention the literally hundreds of extended family members that were close to him as well.  He knew that he was loved and that he gave love right up until the end.

Gramps taught me how to be a man of faith, family, conviction and kindness.  His belief the principles of the founding fathers never wavered, even in today's warped view of what a small and limited government should be.   I can only pray that I can hold a candle to that ideal in my own adult life.  He was and always will be a strong example of the Conservative Family Man that we all should aspire to be.
